It differs from a general calendar because a salon appointment is not one block of time — it has processing and finishing stages another client can be booked into, and it can only be performed by staff qualified for that service.

What to look for
Capacity is created in the gaps, not the hours
Two salons with the same opening hours and the same size team can differ by several appointments a day purely on whether the software can book into processing time. If a colour ties up a stylist for the full seventy minutes rather than the thirty-five they are actually working, the column looks full while the chair is empty.
Staff hours are not salon hours
One stylist works Tuesday to Saturday, another does two late evenings, a third is in on Saturdays only. Scheduling software that models opening hours and then blocks individuals out gets this backwards, and produces bookable slots for people who are not there.

The calendar has to be the thing clients book against
A schedule published to a booking page every few minutes will eventually sell a slot that is already gone. Availability should be computed from the live calendar at the moment the client asks, in the salon’s own timezone, and the write should be refused at the database when two people land on the same slot together.
Watch what it does to a walk-in
Walk-ins are most of the trade in a barbershop and a normal Saturday everywhere else. Adding one should take a few seconds and should not require inventing a client record with a fake phone number, because that is how a client list fills up with people who do not exist.
