Salon gift card software sells gift cards online and at the counter, delivers them to the recipient, and redeems them at checkout against a balance it tracks. The part salons get wrong is the accounting: an unredeemed gift card is money the salon has taken but not yet earned, and it belongs on the books as a liability until the appointment happens.

What to look for
Selling one online should not need a person
Gift cards sell in the two weeks before Christmas, Mother’s Day and Valentine’s, largely in the evening, largely to people who are not existing clients. If buying one requires calling the salon during opening hours, most of that demand is simply lost.
For an amount and for a service are different products
A card for fifty is simple. A card for "a cut and blow dry" has to survive the price of that service changing before it is redeemed. Check which the software supports, and what it does when the price moves.
Expiry is a legal question where you are, not a setting
Minimum validity periods for gift vouchers are set by consumer law and differ by country. Decide the policy against your own jurisdiction, then check the software can express it — including what happens to a card once the date passes.
It has to show up as a liability
Gift card income counted as revenue on the day it is sold overstates a good December and understates the January it is redeemed in. The reports should carry outstanding gift card balances separately.

- Are unredeemed gift cards shown separately in reports?
